Apple Arcade's Retro Bowl College+ Drops the In-App Payments for Pixel Football

Apple Arcade has added another football title to its lineup, but this one leans into retro charm rather than realism. On August 6, Retro Bowl College+ arrived on the service, offering an ad-free, in-app-purchase-free version of New Star Games' 2023 college football spin-off. Players take charge of one of over 250 teams, all rendered in the series' signature chunky pixel art.

The on-field action keeps things simple: dragging back from the quarterback aims a pass, swiping moves the ball carrier, and kicks are handled with basic gestures. Defense runs on simulation, letting players focus on offense. The management side, however, demands more attention. Athletes have ratings and morale, facilities need upgrades, budgets must be balanced, and off-field distractions can pop up.

The standard App Store version of Retro Bowl College is free but includes a $0.99 Unlimited Version and Coaching Credit packs ranging from $1.99 to $9.99. The Apple Arcade edition skips all that. It starts with the expanded 12-player roster, kick returns, the detailed team and conference editor, and Exhibition Mode already unlocked, with no ads or microtransactions.

A new League Style feature is also included, letting players tweak seeding, conference alignments, and team availability to mimic league structures from previous years. The game ships with updated league data for 2026, and players can start a career under an older setup with changes rolling in season by season. The regular App Store version has since received League Style as well.

Apple Arcade's football roster is growing. Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition is now available on the service, and another New Star game, NFL Retro Bowl '27, is slated for September 3.

The Retro Bowl series has always drawn from the past. New Star released the original in January 2020, with studio creator Simon Read citing the Tecmo football games of the 1980s and '90s as a key inspiration. Retro Bowl College followed in September 2023, adding college-specific headaches like recruiting, tight budgets, and monitoring player GPAs. All of that carries over to Retro Bowl College+, which also gives existing players a reason to return.

Choosing the right Retro Bowl ultimately comes down to the kind of stress you prefer. The original offers pro football, College layers on recruiting and academics, and the NFL editions bring licensed teams and players. With Apple Arcade now hosting the full series, fans can pick their favorite distraction without worrying about extra costs.
