Apple's First Foldable, the iPhone Duo, Is Up for Preorder at $1,999
Apple has unveiled its first foldable iPhone, the Duo, with a 7.6-inch inner display and a $1,999 starting price. Preorders are open ahead of an October 23 release, and carriers are rolling out promotions.

Apple's long-anticipated foldable phone is finally official. The iPhone Duo was announced at the company's "Surprise and shine" event, where Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and new Apple Watch models, according to The Verge.
The Duo is Apple's first device with a folding screen. It has a 5.4-inch cover display and opens to a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR panel. Apple Pencil support is slated to arrive later this year, but the phone does not include Face ID. Instead, it uses a Touch ID sensor on its edge for fingerprint unlocking.
The phone carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, with Ceramic Shield 2 on the back and Ceramic Shield on the front display. Internally, it runs the same A20 Pro chipset as the iPhone 18 Pro. It also shares that model's 48-megapixel fusion camera, though it lacks variable aperture.
The Duo comes in two colors, Star White and Night Sky. The 256GB version starts at $1,999. Unlocked preorders are available now from Apple and Best Buy ahead of the Friday, October 23 release date. Several carriers are also offering promotions, though The Verge's report does not detail their terms.
What the specs suggest for daily use
The cover screen is smaller than the main displays on most standard phones, which could affect how much you can do without opening the device. The inner screen is larger than a typical phone display, making it better suited to reading, viewing media, or multitasking when unfolded. Because the phone uses Touch ID rather than Face ID, unlocking habits will change, particularly for anyone accustomed to face-based authentication.
Sharing the A20 Pro chip and the 48-megapixel fusion camera with the iPhone 18 Pro suggests the Duo is positioned as a flagship in performance and photography, not a compromise device. The missing variable aperture is a notable difference for people who rely on fine control over depth of field, but most users are unlikely to notice in everyday shots.
Who should consider upgrading
This is a first-generation product at a premium price. Anyone curious about foldables but wary of early-adopter issues may want to wait for reviews and real-world durability reports, especially around the folding mechanism and screen crease. The IP68 rating and Ceramic Shield materials are reassuring signals, but they are not proof of long-term reliability.
If you already use an iPhone and want a larger screen in a pocketable format, the Duo is the only Apple option in that category. If you depend on Face ID or variable aperture, this device asks for compromises. And if you are simply due for an upgrade, the iPhone 18 Pro offers much of the same core hardware without the foldable premium.
Carrier promotions could change the math on price. The Verge notes that deals exist but does not provide specifics, so buyers should check directly with their carrier before preordering.
The foldable market has existed for years, but Apple's entry is notable because of its scale and influence. Whether the Duo becomes a mainstream form factor or remains a niche product will depend on how buyers respond to its price and trade-offs.
