BYD's New Flagship EV Promises 508-Mile Range and 9-Minute Charging at a Fraction of Lucid's Price

BYD has launched the Great Han sedan in China, offering nearly 508 miles of WLTP range and 9-minute 10-97% charging for around $35,200, undercutting premium rivals like the Lucid Air Grand Touring.

BYD has unveiled its latest flagship electric sedan in China, the BYD Han (dubbed the Great Han), which boasts a range comparable to the Lucid Air Grand Touring but at a significantly lower price. According to TechRadar, the car is priced at 235,900 yuan (approximately $35,200) in its home market, while the Lucid Air Grand Touring costs almost $110,000 in the US.

The Great Han delivers up to 630 miles on China's CLTC test cycle, which translates to around 508 miles on the stricter European WLTP cycle. This puts it in the same league as the Lucid Air Grand Touring, which is often considered the benchmark for electric range. The sedan also features BYD's Flash Charge system, enabling a 10% to 97% charge in just nine minutes.

Beyond range and charging, the Great Han is equipped with advanced technologies such as rear-wheel steering, an augmented-reality head-up display, and dual-chamber air suspension. These features position it as a rival to luxury models from German and British brands.

There is no official word on whether BYD will bring the Great Han to Europe or other markets. However, TechRadar notes that BYD is rapidly expanding its global network and may offer it through its high-end Denza brand in the future. If it does, the price will likely be higher than the Chinese equivalent, but it could still undercut premium competitors.

This launch underscores China's growing ability to deliver cutting-edge automotive technology at lower prices. As Chinese brands like BYD gain acceptance, legacy luxury automakers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz may face increased competition not only in China but also in European markets they have long dominated.

For now, the Great Han is a China-only model, but its combination of range, charging speed, and features at a low price point signals the intensifying global EV race.
