Dolby Atmos vs. Lossless Audio: Which Matters More for Everyday Listening?

Streaming services like Apple Music and Tidal now tag tracks with "Dolby Atmos" or "Lossless," but these labels refer to very different technologies. Engadget breaks down the practical differences and offers an opinion on which upgrade actually matters.
What each technology does
Dolby Atmos is an object-based spatial audio system. Instead of placing sound between left and right channels like traditional stereo, Atmos can position individual sounds anywhere in 3D space, creating a more immersive soundstage. Lossless audio, by contrast, is about preserving the original recording quality. Formats like MP3 and AAC use lossy compression that discards some data; lossless formats such as FLAC and ALAC aim for bit-perfect playback, delivering music as the producer intended.
Technical limitations
The two features rarely overlap on streaming platforms. Dolby Atmos tracks typically use the lossy Dolby Digital Plus codec, while lossless tracks use FLAC or ALAC. A lossless Atmos codec exists (Dolby TrueHD), but it's mostly confined to physical media like Blu-ray discs.
Lossless audio also demands the right hardware. Streaming over Bluetooth re-encodes audio with lossy codecs like SBC or AAC, so true lossless playback generally requires a wired connection. Qualcomm's aptX Lossless is an exception, but it requires compatible Android phones and headphones.
Bit depth and sample rate define lossless quality. For example, CD-quality lossless is 16-bit/44.1kHz, while hi-res lossless goes beyond that, such as 24-bit/96kHz or 24-bit/192kHz. A built-in DAC in a phone or laptop can usually handle CD-quality files, but hi-res content may need an external DAC.
Which makes a bigger difference?
