Hard Boiled 4K Blu-ray Review: Arrow Video's Classic Gets a Reference-Grade Upgrade
TechRadar testers find John Woo's action classic shines on 4K with a Dolby Atmos track that brings new life to its shootouts.
Since TechRadar's monthly Blu-ray column launched in November 2024, reviewer James has tested more than 100 4K discs. While many anticipated titles impressed, one remained frustratingly out of reach: Hard Boiled. The Limited Edition, released in the UK in March 2026, sold out quickly, and restocks vanished just as fast. The wait ended in July, when a standard edition arrived—and it immediately shot to the top of the July 2026 most-anticipated list.
Now that the disc has hit the lab, it's clear the wait was worth it. Hard Boiled is a cornerstone of Hong Kong action cinema, and Arrow Video's 4K treatment elevates it to reference quality.
Sound: Dolby Atmos Tracks the Action
The disc offers three audio options: Cantonese Mono, Cantonese Dolby Atmos, and English Mono. The reviewer primarily tested the Atmos mix, which upscales the original source. On a Samsung HW-Q990C 11.1.4 soundbar, the track delivers a remarkably active soundstage. Bullets ricochet with precise placement—sprays from sub-machine guns move from front to rear channels in sync with the camera. Explosions carry weight, though they don't always trigger subwoofer rumble due to the age of the mix. Still, the track remains balanced, letting subtle details like bullet casings hitting the floor emerge amid gunfire and the lively score.
The Cantonese Mono track also impressed with its clarity, offering a purist alternative.
Picture: Restored Texture and Vivid Color
Arrow Video's restoration is on point. Textures appear natural, with skin taking on a near-3D quality. Close-ups reveal fine details on weapons and ammunition, without artificial sharpening. Color reproduction is vibrant—neon signs in downtown Hong Kong have a rich glow, and restaurant interiors feature punchy yet natural tones, like a striking green door in the opening scene. The film's copious blood looks vivid in some moments and deep and realistic in others.
Contrast is another strong suit. A dimly lit jazz club during the credits shows good separation between shadows and stage lights, while a later scene of a motorcycle parade along the docks demonstrates deep blacks balanced with vehicle headlamps.
HDR highlights are well used, with sparks from car collisions and explosions showing off the capability of a good TV. The reviewer used an LG G6 for testing and noted that these moments really pop.
Film grain has been cleaned up considerably but not eliminated, giving the film a contemporary look while keeping a cinematic feel.
A New Addition to the Reference Shelf
Hard Boiled joins the reviewer's selection of discs used to judge TVs and soundbars, alongside titles like Speed Racer and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The disc retains the specific look of early-'90s Hong Kong cinema and John Woo's signature style, while the new audio and video mixes bring out details that were likely lost on previous home video releases.
The superb Atmos soundtrack adds another layer of immersion, making the explosive action even more engaging. For fans of action cinema or anyone looking for a demo-worthy 4K disc, this release is an easy recommendation. It's another example of how classic films can be revitalized with care and modern technology.
