Squadron 42 Delayed to 2027 to Avoid GTA 6 Launch Clash
Cloud Imperium's long-awaited space epic Squadron 42 has slipped to Q2 2027, with the studio citing the need to steer clear of Rockstar's GTA 6 buzz. A select group of backers will get an early taste this October.

Cloud Imperium Games has pushed back the release of Squadron 42, its single-player cinematic adventure set in the Star Citizen universe, to the second quarter of 2027. The decision, announced by game director Chris Roberts on the Roberts Space Industries website, stems from a desire to avoid going head-to-head with Rockstar's GTA 6, which is slated to hit consoles this November after its own lengthy development.
Roberts explained that the extensive media coverage surrounding GTA 6's launch would leave little room for journalists, streamers, and content creators to give other games the attention they deserve. He described Squadron 42 as a labor of love with 'twelve years of blood, sweat and tears' invested, and expressed concern about it being caught in the 'attention buzz saw' of GTA 6. While the team had initially aimed for an early 2027 release, Roberts said they ultimately decided it would be wiser to wait until the hype around Rockstar's blockbuster has subsided.
For a select group of supporters, the wait will be slightly shorter. A 'small number' of original backers and long-time Star Citizen content creators have been invited to play the game on October 9 and 10, with a formal release date announcement to follow shortly after.
Roberts acknowledged that many fans will be disappointed by the delay, but insisted it is 'the best thing for the project' and that the game is 'truly something special' deserving the full spotlight of the gaming world. He emphasized the team's pride in their work and the desire to give it the best possible launch environment.
Squadron 42 has been in development since its 2013 Kickstarter campaign, which promised a 2015 release. Over the years, it has faced multiple setbacks, with the first gameplay footage only emerging in 2024. The game is positioned as a spiritual successor to the classic Wing Commander series, featuring branching missions and first-person combat. It is planned as a multi-episode release, with Episode One expected to offer around 70 missions and roughly 20 hours of gameplay. The star-studded cast includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Henry Cavill, and Gillian Anderson, among others.
The delay marks another chapter in the saga of Star Citizen's development, a project known for its ambitious scope and extended timeline. As fans await further news, the early access event in October will provide a glimpse of what's been in the works for over a decade.
