An unused Android phone can be repurposed as a no-cost Wi-Fi extender for weak spots in a home network, according to Engadget. Many households have at least one older Android device that is no longer suitable as a daily driver but still functional. Instead of sending it for recycling, users can rely on the phone's built-in hotspot feature to rebroadcast an existing Wi-Fi signal and extend coverage.

The setup does not require special apps, extra hardware, or advanced technical skills. After charging the old phone and installing the latest updates, connect it to the home Wi-Fi network by going to Settings > Network & Internet > Internet. Then enable the Wi-Fi hotspot through Settings > Hotspot & Tethering. Users can rename the hotspot network and set a strong password to keep it secure and easily identifiable. If the phone supports 5GHz, selecting that band under the speed settings may improve performance for nearby devices, but it provides a shorter range than 2.4GHz.

Engadget advises placing the repurposed phone about halfway between the router and the dead zone. Because running a hotspot continuously drains the battery quickly on old phones, it should be kept plugged into a power outlet.

The phone works as a signal relay: it receives Wi-Fi from the router and passes it along as a separate network. Laptops, tablets, and smart TVs can connect to that rebroadcast signal. However, the method has clear limitations. It does not increase internet speed; if the connection is already slow, the hotspot will not fix it. Commercial Wi-Fi extenders and mesh nodes will outperform this Android-based solution. A dedicated extender costs around $50, while mesh systems or new routers can be significantly more expensive.

The Android phone hotspot also creates a separate network, which means there is no seamless roaming. Users may need to manually switch networks as they move around the house. Some smart home devices may not connect reliably to the rebroadcast network, because dedicated extenders often support smart home ecosystems and automatic handoff. Engadget notes that this phone-based approach is best viewed as a temporary fix or a supplementary solution for a single problem area, not a permanent network replacement.

Those who want a more stable connection can explore a USB tethering alternative. Overall, the old-phone method costs nothing if the device is already on hand, takes only minutes to set up, and keeps the phone out of the recycling bin. It is a practical workaround for weak coverage areas, but it is not a substitute for dedicated networking hardware. Users who need whole-home coverage, consistent smart home integration, or automatic roaming should consider upgrading to a commercial extender, mesh node, or new router instead.
