Why 4K Is Called 4K: The Naming Logic Behind Your TV
The name 4K doesn't match your TV's pixel count exactly. Here's the story behind the term, and how it relates to UHD, 2160p, and more.

4K is one of the most familiar display terms, but its name is a bit of a puzzle. Unlike 720p or 1080p, which refer to vertical pixel counts, 4K doesn’t match your TV’s pixel dimensions exactly. In fact, the name predates consumer TVs entirely.
Engadget recently explored how 4K got its name and what all the related terms actually mean.
The '4K' label originally came from Digital Cinema Initiatives, a group formed by major movie studios in the early 2000s to set standards for digital cinema. Their 2005 spec defined 2K (2,048 x 1,080) and 4K (4,096 x 2,160). The '4K' name referred to the horizontal resolution being around 4,000 pixels. Those widths are powers of two, reflecting the binary nature of computer video processing.
Consumer TVs and monitors use a different 4K resolution: 3,840 x 2,160. This is exactly four times the pixel count of 1080p (1,920 x 1,080), because each side is doubled. The cinema variant is slightly wider to suit theater screens and cropping.
This has led to some confusion between 4K and Ultra HD (UHD). UHD is a consumer display standard, while '4K' originally referred to the cinema spec. Many TVs are labeled '4K UHD' to distinguish them from DCI 4K. Historically, 'HD' was used for 720p, and 'Full HD' for 1080p, which added to the mess. Some standards also use the term 2160p, which follows the vertical-pixel naming pattern of 480p and 1080p. The 'p' denotes progressive scanning, where every row is drawn at once, as opposed to the older interlaced approach that alternated rows to save bandwidth.
There is also QHD, or 1440p, which sits between 1080p and 4K. It has a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440, which is four times the pixel count of 720p. The 'quad' in QHD refers to that quadrupling, not to 4K. 1440p is mainly used in PC monitors and isn't a standard source format for streaming services, except for YouTube.
Engadget also clarifies what actually delivers 4K at home. Many broadcast channels still transmit 720p or 1080i, and some streaming services charge extra for UHD. Connected devices such as the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2 can output 4K, though games in 'performance mode' may render at a lower resolution to improve frame rates. 4K Blu-ray discs require a 4K-capable player and an HDMI 2.0 cable at minimum, with HDMI 2.1 supporting higher refresh rates.
Not everything called 4K is native 4K. Upscaling takes lower-resolution content and fills in missing pixels; this is not the same as true 4K output, which was recorded or rendered at that resolution.
Finally, 8K is not likely to catch on soon. There are few real 8K movies or games, and the difference in detail is beyond what the human eye can perceive at normal viewing distances. Diminishing returns, plus the storage and streaming costs, make 8K a distant prospect.
