Amazon Prime Day Deals on Alexa Devices Undercut by August Price Hikes

Amazon's fall Prime Day discounts on Echo and Fire TV devices are less impressive because the company raised prices on many models in August, according to WIRED.

Amazon's fall Prime Day has arrived, bringing discounts on Alexa-powered devices, but a recent wave of price increases has made many of these deals less attractive than they appear. According to WIRED, Amazon raised prices on several device categories at the end of August, so current discounts are often applied to higher list prices, reducing the actual savings.

WIRED's review notes that some devices, like the second-gen Echo Spot, are still good deals. The Echo Spot is 50 percent off its new price, which remains a solid discount from its original $80. The Echo Studio, which did not see a price hike, is $40 off its $220 price. The Amazon Ember Artline TV, also unchanged in price, is $300 off its $1,099 launch price. The Echo Show 11, despite a $30 price increase, is $100 off its new price. The fifth-gen Echo Dot is $40, which WIRED considers the best price for a current model, though the new $80 list price is deemed too high.

Most Kindles are not yet on sale, but all three Kindle Kids models are discounted. WIRED highlights the Kindle Colorsoft Kids as a good option for young readers due to its color screen and one year of Kids+ content. New Kindle models were also announced, giving shoppers a choice between discounted current models and preordering the new ones. Eero routers and other Kindle models like the Paperwhite and Scribe are not on sale yet, but WIRED expects them to be discounted during the event.

The price increases at the end of August appear to be permanent, meaning the best time to buy these devices is during a sale, even if the discounts are not as deep as in previous years. WIRED advises buying only on sale, as the higher list prices make full-price purchases less worthwhile.

This situation raises questions for consumers about the real value of Prime Day deals, for competitors who may benefit if Amazon's devices become less appealing, for developers who rely on Alexa's ecosystem, and for the broader tech market where price hikes on popular devices can influence spending trends. The decision to raise prices and then offer discounts is not unique to Amazon, but it highlights the importance of comparing actual sale prices to historical ones. As WIRED points out, the sales are still worth considering if you need a device, but the savings may not be as significant as they once were. The upcoming Prime Big Deal Days event on October 6-7 will likely see more devices discounted, but shoppers should remain cautious about the true value of each deal.
