Anthropic is moving to design its own AI chips, confirming to TechCrunch that it is assembling a specialized engineering team for the effort. The news, first reported by Business Insider, signals the company’s intent to reduce reliance on external hardware providers as demand for its Claude model family intensifies.

The startup said it plans to co-design custom silicon and AI models to make its technology run faster and more efficiently. This approach mirrors industry trends where leading AI labs seek tailored hardware to optimize performance and cost for their specific workloads.

Anthropic’s chip ambitions come amidst a scramble for AI infrastructure. The company has existing partnerships with major providers including AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD to access computing power. However, as Claude adoption grows, relying solely on third-party hardware appears insufficient. A recent report from The Information indicated Anthropic had been exploring Samsung as a potential manufacturing partner for future chips.

The move places Anthropic among a cohort of AI frontrunners investing in in-house silicon. OpenAI unveiled its Broadcom-built Jalapeño chip in June, designed specifically for inference workloads. Google DeepMind has long utilized Alphabet’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), while Meta continues developing its own MTIA accelerators for AI tasks. Such vertical integration allows companies to optimise performance-per-watt and tailor architectures to their unique model requirements.

A job listing viewed by TechCrunch confirms Anthropic is actively recruiting engineers with chip design experience for a “custom silicon team,” though specifics about timelines or chip capabilities remain undisclosed.

Anthropic’s strategy underscores the intensifying compute demands of frontier AI models and the industry’s shift toward custom hardware as a competitive moat. By bringing chip design in-house, the company aims to gain greater control over its technology stack and potentially lower infrastructure costs at scale.
