Apple Arcade is a game subscription service from Apple, launched in September 2019. It provides access to more than 200 premium games across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro. Unlike typical App Store titles, all Arcade games are free of ads and in-app purchases, offering complete experiences without interruptions.
The library includes original exclusives like the fast-paced platformer Sonic Dream Team, life simulator Hello Kitty Island Adventure, and the role-playing game Fantasian. It also features console and PC ports such as Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 Arcade Edition, Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition, and the indie roguelike Cult of the Lamb. Many popular mobile games appear as “+” versions with no microtransactions, including Doodle Jump 2+ and Fruit Ninja Classic+.
A standard monthly subscription costs $6.99 / £6.99 / AU$9.99. An annual plan at $49.99 / £49.99 / AU$79.99 saves roughly the equivalent of two months’ fees. Subscriptions can be shared with up to six family members at no extra cost. Apple Arcade is also bundled in all Apple One tiers, which combine it with services like iCloud+, Apple TV+, and Apple Music.
New iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV purchasers get a three-month free trial, valid for 93 days. Other new subscribers can claim a one-month trial through the App Store. A payment method is required, so users must cancel before the trial ends to avoid charges.
Most games work with touch controls on iPhone and iPad, and keyboard and mouse on Mac. On Apple TV, a dedicated gamepad is often recommended. Many titles support optional controllers for a more console-like feel.
All Apple Arcade games can be downloaded and played offline, making them suitable for travel. Progress is saved via iCloud, so if a subscription lapses, data remains until resubscription. Games occasionally leave the service, but a grace period allows continued play before removal.
For iOS, direct competitors are limited. Cloud services like Amazon Luna stream console and PC titles through a browser, but they require a constant internet connection and a controller for most games. On Android, Google Play Pass offers a cheaper, ad-free mobile game catalog with some productivity apps, though its library is less curated and lacks notable exclusives.
Apple Arcade suits those who want a polished, ad-free mobile gaming experience without the risks of impulse purchases. The exclusive titles and seamless family sharing add value for Apple device owners.
