Apple may be preparing to charge users for additional AI access, according to comments made by CEO Tim Cook during Thursday's earnings call. Cook said he expects people to use Apple Intelligence and the upgraded Siri AI "a lot," and that the company is considering "some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud Plus where people can buy up the stack."
This fall, Apple is set to roll out the long-awaited Siri AI as part of iOS 27, which will be able to answer questions about on-screen content and take actions within apps. The update also introduces a standalone Siri AI app with a ChatGPT-like interface.
In June, Apple acknowledged that its AI features, including image generation, would have daily usage limits due to reliance on powerful server models. The company said that increased access would be available across most iCloud+ plans, but it now seems Apple may be exploring additional tiers for power users.
Apple's services segment, which includes subscriptions like iCloud+, Apple TV, and Apple One, generated $30.74 billion in revenue over the past quarter, underscoring the importance of subscription growth to the company's bottom line.
