Apple Releases iOS 27 and Sibling OS Updates; Siri AI Leads in Beta Form

Apple has started distributing its latest major software releases. As The Verge reported, iOS 27 arrives today alongside watchOS 27, iPadOS 27 and visionOS 27.

The centerpiece across all four platforms is Siri AI, the long-delayed rebuild of Apple's voice assistant. Verge reporting describes it as the headline feature of the release wave. It ships today as a beta and, for now, only on English-language devices. Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support will follow in October. Anyone running the feature before then is using unfinished software.

There is more to the update than the assistant. Apple has added a Liquid Glass opacity control in iOS 27, letting users shift the interface between a clearer and a frostier look. Several built-in apps receive redesigned icons with adjusted colors, and widgets can now run larger. Apple has also split volume controls so ringtones, alarms, timers, alerts and system sounds can be adjusted separately — a change likely to matter to people who have long wanted alarms louder than notification pings.

On the watch, watchOS 27 adds Workout Buddy features, a new tap gesture, further Liquid Glass refinements, additional Smart Stack suggestions and an updated Find My app. iPad users get faster transfers to external drives, quicker browsing and smoother handoff between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, according to the Verge account.

For Vision Pro owners, visionOS 27 brings the Siri AI overhaul plus the ability to preview notifications with the eyes, Control Center interface changes, Wi-Fi connectivity improvements and support for turning captured panoramas into immersive scenes and environments. That last item relies on photos users have already taken rather than new dedicated content.

Device support is broad but bounded. iOS 27 runs on iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (second generation) and later. watchOS 27 requires Apple Watch SE 3, Apple Watch Series 9 or above, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or above. iPadOS 27 covers iPad Pro (fourth generation and later, M1 and later), iPad Air (fourth generation and later, M2 and later), iPad mini (sixth generation, A17 Pro) and the base iPad (ninth generation and later, A16). Owners of older hardware are excluded.

How meaningful all this proves in daily use is a separate question from what shipped. The Siri AI overhaul is the item Apple has spent the longest promising, and its beta status and limited language support mean most users will not experience its full intended form for months. The remaining changes read as incremental: interface tuning, volume granularity, small app-level improvements. None of that is trivial, but it points to a release being received as steady refinement rather than a step change — at least until Siri AI exits beta and expands beyond English.

Upgrade decisions follow from device eligibility first. If a user's iPhone, iPad or Watch is on the supported list, the update is available; if it is not, no feature discussion applies. For those who are eligible, the practical case for installing early rests mainly on whether they want to test Siri AI in its beta state or use the smaller quality-of-life changes immediately. Waiting carries little obvious penalty.
