Bungie's new leadership has publicly addressed the studio's recent struggles and outlined a path forward for its key franchises. In a video and blog post, studio head Poria Torkan and Josh Deane, head of product and general manager for Marathon, acknowledged that recent work has fallen short of expectations, citing limited reach for Marathon and player dissatisfaction with recent Destiny 2 expansions.
Despite an announcement in May that active development on Destiny 2 would end and layoffs in June, the studio now says it is "not done with Destiny." A central pledge is to begin restoring content that had been removed from Destiny 2—a reversal of the 2020 "vaulting" strategy that sent less popular gameplay and activities out of rotation. The blog post states, "We cannot change the decision we made, but we can acknowledge its impact and do the work to make it right by restoring these important parts of Destiny's history." Bungie promises more updates on the unvaulting efforts in the coming months and frames one of its core commitments as building a stronger long-term future for Destiny while honoring and restoring its past.
For Marathon, the team recently shared a roadmap for the remainder of 2026. The new post offers few long-term details, saying only that Bungie will "anchor on what makes Marathon special but evolve it beyond the genre constraints we placed on it" and expand it into "a deeper survival experience, that gives players more ways to take on this dangerous alien world." What that means in practice remains unclear.
The leadership change adds another variable: former studio head Justin Truman stepped down over the summer after about a year in the role. Fans will be watching to see what the new team delivers.
Bungie is not the first studio to face a public reckoning with its community, and it likely won't be the last. The coming months will test whether these promises translate into concrete improvements.
