Google provides two distinct apps for managing images: Google Photos and Gallery. While Photos is feature-rich, Gallery is a simpler alternative. According to Engadget, you can install both and choose per use.

The most significant difference is cloud backup. Photos can automatically back up your images to the cloud; Gallery cannot. To enable backup in Photos, tap your avatar and toggle Backup. You can also see how much storage you can free up.

Storage limits have changed. Older personal Google accounts include 15GB of free storage, but accounts created on or after March 9, 2026, get only 5GB by default. You can unlock 10GB more by verifying a phone number. This storage is shared across Google services like Gmail, Drive, WhatsApp, and Photos. To expand, you need a Google One subscription: $2/month for 100GB or $3/month for 200GB.

Buying extra storage is a quick fix for running out of space. Photos also offers a "Free up space" option that deletes locally stored items already backed up to the cloud. Note that if you manually move images to Trash in either app, they will be permanently removed from cloud backup and all devices after 30 days.

If you prefer manual backups and deleting images from your phone, Gallery might suffice. You can also use an external USB-C drive for storage instead of relying on the cloud.

Gallery offers minimal editing: rotate, crop, and a few filters. Photos provides a wider range of tools, including AI enhancements. You can adjust brightness, contrast, tone, highlights, and shadows; add blur, sharpen, or move elements; doodle and add text; and use a one-tap tool to smooth skin, whiten teeth, and reduce under-eye shadows.

If you edit frequently, Photos may be better—unless you already use a dedicated editing app. Gallery is adequate for occasional cropping. Sharing to social media, email, or messaging apps works the same in both, so that shouldn't influence your choice.
