Google's Motion Assist Reaches Android, Borrowing a Page From Apple's Playbook

Google has started rolling out Motion Assist, an Android feature that uses on-screen animated shapes to reduce carsickness for passengers. The tool requires Android 17 and updated Play Services, and follows Apple's similar Vehicle Motion Cues from 2024.

Google's answer to carsickness arrives on Android

Google has launched Motion Assist, an Android feature intended to help passengers avoid motion sickness while looking at their phones in a moving car. According to Engadget, the tool is now rolling out after Apple introduced a comparable feature, Vehicle Motion Cues, in iOS 18 in 2024.

What the feature does

Motion Assist uses the phone's motion sensors to move small shapes around the edges of the display in response to the vehicle's movements. Google says this helps "your brain synchronize what your eyes see with what your body feels." The shapes stay at the perimeter, so central content remains visible.

Motion sickness is commonly explained as a sensory conflict: the inner ear detects motion while the eyes focus on a static screen, producing disagreeable signals in the brain. Google's feature is designed to reduce that mismatch by giving the eyes a moving reference that matches the body's sense of movement.

The feature is intended for passengers only. Google explicitly advises against using it while driving.

Availability and setup

Motion Assist requires a device running Android 17 or higher with updated Google Play Services. Engadget reports that Samsung phones must be running One UI 9. Pixel 11 owners can try it immediately, according to the report.

To enable it on a Pixel, users navigate to Settings, tap their profile, select All services, and toggle Motion Assist on from the Personal & device safety menu. The feature can also be set to start automatically when the phone detects a moving vehicle, though motion sensors may not always recognize that context reliably. Google recommends adding Motion Assist to the Quick Settings menu for quicker access.

Customization options include adjustments to colors, opacity, and shapes, accessible through a Customize menu. A Randomization option changes the colors and shapes during use.

On other Android brands, menu paths may differ. Searching for "Motion Assist" in settings is described as the most direct way to find it.

What it means

The arrival of Motion Assist on Android is less a technological breakthrough than a convergence: both major mobile platforms now offer a similar accessibility-oriented tool for a common complaint. The feature's practical value will depend on how reliably the automatic activation works and whether the visual overlay genuinely reduces symptoms for users prone to carsickness. Google's implementation offers a reasonable degree of customization, which may help users tune the effect to their comfort.

For now, the feature is limited to recent Android versions and, on Samsung devices, the latest One UI release. That means many users will not see it immediately. Those who do can test whether the moving shapes make a difference on their next ride.
