The read-later app Instapaper has received a major update with version 10, introducing a redesigned interface, an improved web experience, and new tools for organization and reading. The launch was highlighted in the latest issue of The Verge’s Installer newsletter.
Instapaper, one of the pioneering read-later services, has undergone ownership changes but is now steadily developed by Brian Donohue. According to the newsletter, the update makes Instapaper “the go-to recommendation for reading apps” for most users, though power users may still prefer Readwise.
In a homescreen feature accompanying the news, Donohue shared that he is working on two new applications not yet available in the App Store.
Emerald is a Markdown editor targeting native iOS and macOS compatibility and collaborative editing. Donohue, a former Obsidian user, cited dissatisfaction with that app’s performance in these areas. Emerald is approaching beta, with a waitlist available.
Sunflower is an email client by designer Bobby Goodlatte and team, featuring AI-powered inbox summaries, conversational email search, and an upcoming “Autopilot” automation feature. Donohue noted trying similar tools like Extra and Cora but finding them lacking.
Donohue’s current iOS setup includes an iPhone 16 Pro, with apps such as Claude and Linear playing central roles in his workflow. The Instapaper widget now integrates with Apple’s widget stacks alongside News, Stocks, and Weather.
The Installer community also contributed recommendations this week, including the logic game Murdoku, the movie showtime app Paradiso, the Good Lock customization suite for Samsung foldables, and a travel charger from ESR that one user found superior to Anker’s equivalent. Others discussed switching to Obsidian and Claude for knowledge management, using Readwise Reader for newsletter organization, and watching the restored Lawrence of Arabia.
A standout web experience mentioned is “The Everything Machine,” an interactive exploration of smartphone technology that reacts as users scroll.
