iPhone 18 Pro Looks Identical to 17 Pro, But Your Old Case Might Not Fit

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max appear visually almost indistinguishable from the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, according to Macworld. The brushed aluminum unibody chassis and camera plateau remain practically unchanged, and Apple's official tech specs list identical measurements for both generations. A few minor visual differences exist, including a smaller Dynamic Island on the front and new color options.

The new models are slightly heavier than their predecessors—the iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211g compared to 204g for the 17 Pro, while the 18 Pro Max comes in at 249g versus 233g. According to Macworld, this added weight stems from internal changes: the new A20 Pro chip, Apple cellular modems, and a vapour chamber.

Despite matching dimensions, there is one nearly imperceptible physical difference that affects accessories. The camera bump on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max is approximately 0.5mm taller than on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, a measurement Apple does not track in its tech specs. This small change means some iPhone 17 Pro cases may fit the newer phone too snugly or appear slightly misaligned, depending on the brand and case type.

Macworld reached out to several case manufacturers for clarification on compatibility. OtterBox stated its iPhone 18 Pro and Max cases are "also compatible with iPhone 17 Pro, so the cases can be used interchangeably between those two models." Decoded similarly said its iPhone 18 cases "are also compatible with the iPhone 17 models." Mous acknowledged the taller camera bump but confirmed its iPhone 17 Pro cases will still fit the 18, while noting its new cases are custom-built for each device to guarantee a perfect fit and protection.

Not all manufacturers agree, however. Rokform, which specializes in rugged cases, told Macworld that its iPhone 18 Pro cases are compatible with both the 18 Pro and 17 Pro, but its older iPhone 17 Pro case lineup is not compatible with iPhone 18 models due to differences in the camera plateau design. Cases designed with particularly tight tolerances may encounter issues with the 18's taller camera bump.

The practical takeaway is that you should be able to fit an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max into a new case designed for the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max. The reverse—using an older iPhone 17 Pro case on an iPhone 18 Pro—may not work reliably. If you are shopping for a case for a new iPhone 18 Pro, the safest approach is to purchase one explicitly labeled as compatible with that specific model. New cases are built to match each device precisely, and buying a case designed for your exact iPhone model remains the most reliable way to ensure a proper fit and adequate protection.
