Neurable One EEG headphones launch without Master & Dynamic

Neurable's third-generation EEG headphones arrive at $499 with brain-tracking features and a lighter design, but the real-world value of the biometrics remains unclear.

Neurable, a company focused on brain-scanning technology, has launched its third pair of premium headphones, the Neurable One. Unlike its earlier models, the MW75 Neuro and Neuro LT, which were developed in partnership with audio brand Master & Dynamic, the Neurable One is a solo effort. The headphones are available today and priced at $499, according to Engadget.

The Neurable One is designed to monitor focus throughout the workday. After activating the EEG sensor, the headphones track brain waves and attention levels to identify peak focus periods. When focus begins to decline, the system suggests taking a break to avoid depleting energy. The device also reports Alpha Peak Frequency, a metric that Neurable describes as a broader indicator of cognitive function.

Beyond break recommendations, the Neurable One provides a range of metrics typical of wearable devices, but focused on brain activity rather than physical fitness. These include brain age, mental processing speed, and how sleep quality affects next-day function. Neurable has also partnered with HyperX, a collaboration Engadget experienced in January, where improved calmness was linked to better accuracy in a first-person shooter game.

As a pair of headphones, the Neurable One features 40mm beryllium drivers and six microphones for active noise cancellation (ANC), along with ambient passthrough. Battery life is rated at 22 hours without EEG and 12 hours with EEG active, which Neurable says should cover a full workday.

The shift away from Master & Dynamic marks a significant change for Neurable. The previous partnership helped establish the company's presence in the premium audio market, and the Neuro LT was introduced to address weight concerns. Now, Neurable is positioning itself as both the brain-tracking specialist and the audio manufacturer, a move that could streamline development but also places full responsibility for sound quality on the company.

For potential buyers, the key question is whether the EEG features offer meaningful benefits in daily use. The ability to track focus and receive break reminders could appeal to knowledge workers seeking to optimize productivity, but the accuracy and practical value of such metrics are not yet independently verified. The brain age and processing speed metrics, while intriguing, lack context without longitudinal data or clinical validation.

The HyperX partnership suggests Neurable is exploring applications beyond general productivity, potentially targeting gamers who want to monitor and improve their mental state during play. However, the effectiveness of such training remains speculative.

At $499, the Neurable One competes with high-end headphones from established audio brands. While the beryllium drivers and ANC specifications are competitive, the premium price is largely justified by the EEG technology. Whether that technology delivers actionable insights or is merely a novelty will determine its appeal.

Neurable's move to go solo could be seen as a confidence boost in its own hardware capabilities, but it also means the company must now prove it can match the audio quality that Master & Dynamic brought to previous models. Early reviews will be crucial in assessing whether the Neurable One succeeds as both a brain-tracking device and a premium headphone.

For now, the Neurable One represents another step in the growing trend of wearable biometrics moving beyond fitness to cognitive monitoring. As with many such devices, the challenge lies in translating raw data into meaningful, trustworthy guidance that users can integrate into their daily routines.
