One AirPod Not Working? A Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide
If only one of your AirPods is silent, it's likely a charging or connection issue. Here's how to get both earbuds working again.

One AirPod Not Working? Here's How to Fix It
When a single AirPod stops producing sound, it can be more puzzling than when both fail. According to Engadget, the culprit is often a charging problem, and the fix is usually straightforward.
Start with Cleaning and Charging
Begin by cleaning the charging port on the AirPods case and ensuring the case itself is charged. Grime can accumulate inside the case, particularly at the bottom where the earbuds connect to charge, so a thorough cleaning there is essential.
Next, charge both AirPods for 30 seconds. Then open the case near your iPhone—a popup should appear showing the charge status of both the case and the earbuds. For quicker checks, you can add a Batteries widget to your iPhone's home screen.
If the charging status looks normal, test the malfunctioning AirPod while keeping the working one closed inside the case. If it works, charge both earbuds for another 30 seconds and test again.
Reset Your AirPods
If the problem persists, a reset may help. This restores your AirPods to their default settings but is otherwise painless.
For AirPods 3, AirPods Pro 2, or older models: place the AirPods in their case with the lid closed and wait 30 seconds. Then go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone. If your AirPods appear, tap the 'i' icon next to them and select 'Forget This Device.' If they don't appear, open the case lid, hold the circular setup button on the back for 15 seconds, and wait for the status light to flash amber and white. Follow the on-screen instructions from there.
For AirPods 5 (both models), AirPods 4, or AirPods Pro 3, the reset process is similar but uses a different button input. Instead of holding the button, you'll double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on, double-tap again when the light flashes white, and a third time when it flashes faster. The same amber-to-white pattern should occur, and instructions will appear on your device.
Inspect and Clean the Earbud
If trouble continues, inspect the silent earbud and compare it to the working one. A quick cleaning of the individual AirPod can help—check the speaker mesh for debris and wipe it with a soft cloth. If the ear tips are torn or not sealing well, consider replacing them.
After cleaning, give both the AirPods and the case a full charge if you haven't already. Finally, restart your iPhone to rule out a software bug, and try a different audio source to confirm the issue isn't with the original device.
Unbalanced Audio?
If you're experiencing unbalanced audio rather than one bud being completely silent, go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual on your iPhone. Ensure the Balance slider is centered to prevent audio from favoring one ear over the other.
These steps, outlined by Engadget, should resolve most cases of a single AirPod not working. If the problem persists after all these attempts, it may indicate a hardware failure that requires professional service.
