Anthropic's Claude Code Limit Increase Is Actually a 17% Cut for Current Users

Anthropic is promoting a permanent 25% increase to Claude Code weekly allowances, but current users will see their allotments shrink by nearly a fifth when the new rates take effect in September.

The company announced on X that the standard weekly limits for Claude Code will permanently rise by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. However, users currently benefit from a temporary 50% increase that expires September 13. When the permanent increase lands the next day, the effective change is a 17% reduction from today's levels.

To put it simply, if the original weekly allowance were 100, the temporary boost gives 150 today. On September 14, that drops to 125. So while it's true that the permanent limit is 25% above the original baseline, it's 17% below what users have become accustomed to during the promotional period.

Anthropic initially made the announcement on X and later deleted that thread, replacing it with a clarification that directly acknowledges the decrease. "Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code," the company said. Anthropic added that it is working on "exciting changes" that will make it feel like users are getting more from Claude, with better visibility and control over usage.

The company also noted that Claude Code's weekly allowance does not translate into a fixed number of prompts. Usage can vary based on conversation length, model choice, tool usage, and effort level, so the actual impact on a given user will depend on how they interact with the tool.

For users on the affected plans, the current 50% temporary increase remains available through September 13. Beginning September 14, the new permanent limits take effect. This change is not a security fix or a response to an incident; it's a routine adjustment to usage policy, albeit one that is framed in a way that initially obscured the net decrease.

The deletion of the original announcement and subsequent clarification suggest Anthropic recognized that its first message was misleading. The updated wording is more transparent about the fact that, compared to the temporary level, users are getting less. Those who have ramped up their usage in recent weeks may need to plan for reduced capacity starting in mid-September.

This development does not introduce any privacy or security concerns. It is purely a change to service allowances. Users on Pro, Max, Team, or seat-based Enterprise plans should note the September 14 cutoff and adjust their usage expectations accordingly.
