
LG Display has unveiled a new OLED manufacturing technique called FLiPP (Fine metal mask Less Photolithography Process) that it claims can significantly improve panel durability and performance. According to the company, FLiPP-based displays can last 2.4 times longer than conventional OLEDs under the same conditions, while also delivering a 1.6-fold increase in brightness and reducing power consumption by 13%.
Traditional OLED panels rely on fine metal masks (FMM) to deposit red, green, and blue emissive materials onto the substrate. However, as panel sizes grow, these masks can sag, causing alignment errors and color mixing defects. FLiPP eliminates the mask altogether: instead, RGB materials are deposited sequentially and then patterned using photolithography with UV light to remove unwanted areas. This approach increases the usable pixel area by about 55%, providing more headroom for brightness and longevity enhancements without requiring additional power.
The new process also offers greater flexibility in panel size and resolution, theoretically applicable to displays ranging from 1 inch to 100 inches. LG Display plans to bring FLiPP first to IT products such as monitors and tablets, positioning these categories as the initial testbeds for the technology's commercial viability.
Another potential advantage is manufacturing efficiency. FLiPP can utilize the entire 8.5-generation mother glass substrate rather than cutting it into smaller sections, improving glass utilization by up to 64% for equivalent laptop panels. While this could lower production costs, LG Display has not indicated whether such savings would be passed on to consumers.
Despite the promising claims, FLiPP remains an announcement rather than a market-ready product. LG Display has not named any device partners or provided a commercial release date. The first FLiPP-equipped monitors and tablets will need to demonstrate that the technology's benefits hold up in real-world usage and deliver a noticeable upgrade over existing OLED panels beyond specifications.
