Hello Games has announced that No Man's Sky will arrive on iOS on October 28, with versions for iPhone and iPad. According to a blog post from studio head Sean Murray, the mobile release is essentially the full game, not a stripped-down edition. "I guess I should say this is not No Man's Sky Lite," Murray wrote. The iOS version includes all updates released since the game's 2016 debut, such as last year's Voyagers expansion, with the main omissions being multiplayer and planetary settlements. Murray compared the approach to the game's original Switch launch, noting that the studio will support iOS based on player feedback and engagement.

The game will run on iPhone 11 and 3rd generation iPad Air and newer models. The download size is surprisingly small at 5GB, and the mobile version introduces newly designed touch controls. It also supports external controllers, screen casting, and mouse-and-keyboard input on iPad. Murray highlighted the team's focus on battery life and thermal management, stating that players can enjoy "really long comfortable play sessions." The game will be free to try at launch, though pricing for the full version has not been disclosed.

This release marks another platform for a game that has expanded far beyond its initial PlayStation and PC launch. No Man's Sky is now available on Mac, PC, virtually every modern console, and in VR. Hello Games has maintained the game with a steady stream of free expansions, including the recent Cosmos update in September, which added more to explore in space. The iOS version joins this extensive list, bringing the full experience to mobile devices for the first time.

The announcement comes as the game approaches its tenth anniversary, a milestone that underscores its remarkable turnaround from a controversial launch to a long-running success. While the iOS version lacks some features, its comprehensive content and technical optimizations suggest Hello Games aims to deliver a mobile experience that rivals its console and PC counterparts. The studio's commitment to ongoing support, as evidenced by years of free updates, indicates that iOS players can expect similar treatment. However, the absence of multiplayer and settlements may disappoint those seeking the complete social and building aspects of the game. The free-to-try model will allow users to sample the experience before committing, but the lack of pricing details leaves questions about accessibility. As mobile gaming continues to grow, this move could signal a broader trend of bringing complex, console-quality titles to smartphones and tablets. For now, iOS users can look forward to exploring the vast universe of No Man's Sky on October 28, with the promise of a full-fledged adventure tailored for touch and portable play.

This report is based on information from The Verge and Hello Games' announcement. Confirmed details include the release date, supported devices, download size, and missing features. The game's performance and battery life claims are based on the developer's statements and have not been independently verified. Pricing for the full version remains unknown.
