Reddit Tests Audio and Video Versions of Text Posts

Reddit is rolling out a limited experiment that turns text posts and comments into audio and short video formats, aiming to attract new users and boost engagement.

Reddit is known for its steadfast adherence to text-based discussion, but the company is now experimenting with more dynamic content formats. In a limited test rolling out to a sample of posts across select communities, users can opt to listen to posts or watch them as short videos, according to an announcement to Engadget. The audio and video versions will link back to the original text posts and comments, which will remain unchanged, a spokesperson said.

The exact appearance of these new formats is still unclear, but Reddit has recently expanded its video capabilities. In June, the platform added video comments, allowing users to post videos in threads that play in a full-screen player.

This experiment is part of Reddit's broader strategy to attract new users and keep lurkers returning. CEO Steve Huffman hinted at the move during the company's recent earnings call, noting the rise of podcasts that narrate Reddit content and suggesting that a spoken version of Reddit could be engaging.

For now, Reddit is cautious in its rollout, emphasizing that the experiment is limited and will not alter the core text experience. The company has a history of preserving its classic interface, even maintaining a 21-year-old version of its site for longtime users. Whether this test leads to a permanent feature remains to be seen, but it signals Reddit's willingness to adapt to evolving content consumption habits.

The test also gives Reddit a way to reach people who encounter its discussions outside the traditional forum interface. Audio narration could make longer posts easier to consume while multitasking, while short-form video could package conversations in a format already familiar from other social platforms. Reddit has not said which communities or post types are included, so conclusions about adoption would be premature.

The link back to the unchanged post and comment thread is an important part of the design. It keeps the original discussion available as the primary record while the experimental formats act as alternative entry points. Reddit will still need to determine how presentation, attribution and moderation translate when a text conversation is converted into audio or video.
