Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G Review: Durability and Battery Take Center Stage

A mid-ranger built around toughness and battery

Redmi's latest mid-range entry, the Note 17 Pro 5G, leans on two selling points: a rugged body and a large battery. In a review published by Newsbytes.PH, the device is positioned under the tagline "Titan Power, Go Max," pairing an 8,340 mAh battery with a 6.83-inch AMOLED screen and a comprehensive set of dust and water resistance ratings.

Newsbytes.PH tested the phone as a daily driver and concluded it works best as a durable, long-lasting companion rather than a performance standout.

Display, design, and durability

The 6.83-inch AMOLED panel runs at 2772 × 1280 pixels with a refresh rate up to 120 Hz and a peak brightness of 3,200 nits. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects the screen.

The phone measures 163.45 × 78.27 × 8.6 mm and weighs 223 grams. Newsbytes.PH described it as hefty but comfortable. Its standout durability feature is an unusually broad set of ingress protection ratings: IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K. According to Redmi, the device can survive immersion at depths up to two meters for as long as 72 hours. It also carries SGS certification for drops from up to three meters.

The review noted one usability quirk: the wet-touch function is overly sensitive and can register unintended touches when hands are wet or in the rain.

Performance and software

Under the hood, the Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G uses a Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 octa-core processor with an Adreno GPU. The base configuration offers 6 GB of RAM, expandable virtually to 12 GB.

On Geekbench 7, the device scored 870 single-core and 2,593 multi-core. Its AnTuTu CPU score came in at 312,042. Newsbytes.PH characterized these results as competent for browsing, social media, messaging, video streaming, and general productivity.

Graphics performance is more modest. The Adreno GPU scored 763 on Geekbench 7 and 82,076 on AnTuTu. The graphics-heavy title "Where Winds Meet" ran at Ultra settings, but with noticeable stuttering; lowering the settings produced smoother gameplay at the cost of image quality.

The phone ships with Xiaomi HyperOS 3 based on Android 16 and includes AI-powered image tools, Circle to Search with Google, and Google Gemini. Its Geekbench AI quantized score of 1,979 suggests basic AI functions are within reach, though more demanding workloads may be a challenge.

Battery life

Battery life is a core strength. The 8,340 mAh cell supports 67 W HyperCharge and 22.5 W wired reverse charging. In the PCMark Work 3.1 battery test, the device lasted 22 hours and 32 minutes. Newsbytes.PH said that should be more than enough for a full day of normal use, with reserve left for long stretches away from a charger. Reverse charging also lets the phone act as a power source for other compatible devices.

Camera

The camera setup includes a 50 MP main sensor, an 8 MP ultrawide, and a 16 MP front camera. Newsbytes.PH judged main-camera images decent, aided by AI image processing, and adequate for casual photography and social media. Photography is not the device's standout feature.

Video recording is capped at 30 frames per second at both 720p and 1080p. The main camera has optical image stabilization, but the review found handheld recordings can still be shaky. Buyers who prioritize video may find the 30 fps cap and basic stabilization limiting.

Storage and configuration concerns

Newsbytes.PH flagged storage as the biggest concern. Around 30 GB is occupied by system files, and there is no microSD card slot for expansion. The 128 GB base version could quickly become limiting for users who keep many apps, photos, videos, or games on their device.

Newsbytes.PH concluded the Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G is a durable and reliable daily workhorse with excellent battery life, but relatively basic performance and a relatively high price for its class. The review noted strong competition from phones offering better performance at similar or lower prices, and recommended the 8 GB + 256 GB configuration for more practical headroom.

For buyers in the Philippines and Southeast Asia who prioritize toughness and endurance over raw speed, the device makes a case. For those who game heavily or record a lot of video, the review suggests looking elsewhere.
