Sennheiser has announced the Momentum True Wireless 5, its latest flagship earbuds, which stand out for offering user-replaceable batteries—a rarity in the mainstream earbud market. The earbuds are priced at $299.95 and will ship from September 3rd.
This move addresses a common pain point for wireless earbud owners: battery degradation over time, which typically forces replacement of the entire device. Sennheiser's new design lets users open the earbuds and charging case with a small screwdriver to swap in fresh cells, potentially extending the product's lifespan significantly.
In terms of audio, the Momentum True Wireless 5 features 7mm TrueResponse dynamic drivers, manufactured and tested at Sennheiser's facility in Tullamore, Ireland. They support Bluetooth 6.0 with aptX Adaptive, allowing hi-res playback up to 24-bit/96kHz and aptX Lossless for bit-perfect audio.
Active noise cancellation (ANC) has been updated with a redesigned ear tip and a four-microphone array. The adaptive hybrid ANC system includes an automatic anti-wind mode and what Sennheiser calls its most natural transparency mode yet. Dolby Atmos with head tracking brings spatial audio to the earbuds.
Call quality benefits from six microphones and two bone-conduction voice accelerometers, paired with an AI-based speech extraction algorithm to isolate the wearer's voice in noisy environments.
Comfort has also been a focus: Sennheiser reports that 73% of testers rated the new shape as more comfortable than the previous generation. With an IP54 rating, the earbuds resist dust, sweat, and splashes, and the charging case is narrower for easier pocket carry.
Battery life is rated at 12 hours per charge, with the case providing two additional charges for a total of up to 40 hours. An 8-minute quick charge yields about an hour of playback.
Available in five colors—Graphite, Cream, Copper, Denim, and Lavender—the Momentum True Wireless 5 will be sold through Sennheiser's website and select retailers.
While not the first earbuds to offer replaceable batteries, Sennheiser's mainstream push could pressure other major brands to follow suit, especially as consumers become more environmentally conscious.
