Sony has taken the wraps off its latest super-telephoto zoom for full-frame E-mount cameras: the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS. Weighing roughly 654 grams, the lens targets photographers who need reach without the bulk, making it a fit for wildlife, sports, and outdoor scenes.
The optical layout includes two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements and two aspherical elements, aiming to curb chromatic aberration and other distortions throughout the zoom range. A nine-blade circular aperture is designed to render smoother background bokeh.
Autofocus duties are handled by a linear motor, which Sony says delivers swift and quiet performance. When attached to the Sony α9 III, the lens supports continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to approximately 120 frames per second.
Built-in optical stabilization helps reduce camera shake during handheld shooting at extended focal lengths, and the lens is compatible with Active Mode and coordinated stabilization when used with select camera bodies.
Close-up capability is set at a minimum focus distance of 0.86 meters at the telephoto end and 1.13 meters at the wide end, offering a maximum magnification of 0.41x. Photographers can extend reach via optional teleconverters, pushing the lens to 800mm, or up to 1,200mm in APS-C mode.
The lens is also built to withstand the elements with dust and moisture resistance, and includes a focus hold button, focus range switch, zoom lock switch, and a supplied hood.
In the Philippines, the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS is now available for pre-order at PHP 53,000. Those who pre-order get a free H&Y Ultimate HD Protection Filter 67mm, valued at PHP 1,900, plus PHP 6,000 off either the 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverter when purchased together. The promotion runs from August 5 to September 4, 2026.
