Spotify on Monday introduced Playlist Notes, a feature that allows playlist creators and collaborators to add text annotations to individual items. The feature expands on User Notes, which the company rolled out last month for single tracks. Users can now add context to songs, podcast episodes, and audiobooks within a playlist. To create a note, users open a playlist they own or collaborate on in the mobile app, tap the three-dot menu next to an item, select "add note," and save it. Notes are visible to anyone who can view the playlist.
Spotify is also applying the concept to its own editorial playlists. Editors can now attach notes explaining why particular songs were chosen. The feature initially appears on several major playlists, including Today's Top Hits, RapCaviar, Hot Country, All New Pop, and Fresh Finds Hip-Hop. Additionally, Spotify introduced Editor Profiles, which display an editor's top tracks, albums, and the playlists they manage, offering listeners insight into the people behind curated recommendations.
User-created notes are rolling out on iOS and Android in more than 100 markets. Editor notes and profiles are available to free and premium users aged 16 and older in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
The feature is part of Spotify's effort to make the app more social and personal, and to differentiate from competitors like Apple Music and YouTube Music. Spotify recently reported surpassing 300 million subscribers for the first time and reaching 777 million monthly active users.
