TECHNOMALISTSpotify is rolling out a new feature called Playlist Notes, aimed at giving listeners more insight into why tracks are included in playlists. The feature allows users and Spotify's editorial team to attach short notes to individual items within a playlist, such as songs, podcast episodes, and audiobooks.
For editors, Playlist Notes will appear on some of Spotify's most popular curated playlists, including Today's Top Hits and RapCaviar, according to a report by Digital Trends. They can use these notes to explain their reasoning behind including a track or why it feels culturally relevant at the moment. Alongside notes, Spotify is also introducing Editor Profiles, which showcase an editor's favorite tracks, albums, and all playlists they manage, giving users a behind-the-scenes look at who curates the music.
For regular users, Playlist Notes can be added to any playlist they own or collaborate on. By tapping the three dots next to a track, users can select 'Add Note' and write a message, such as a memory associated with the song or why the track is significant. However, these notes are visible to anyone who can view the playlist, so users are advised to be mindful about sharing personal details.
The feature originated from an earlier concept called User Notes, as reported by Digital Trends. Editor notes are initially available to Free and Premium users aged 16 and above in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, on a select set of playlists. Users on mobile can access notes by tapping the Notes icon at the top of the playlist, and they will also appear in the Now Playing view even if not listening directly from the playlist.
For personal playlists, the feature is rolling out on iOS and Android in over 100 markets, with Spotify advising users to update their apps if the feature is not yet visible.
